Charade Quilt Along Cutting Fabrics

Hey Quilty Friends!

Welcome to Week 1 - the official week 1 - of the Charade Quilt Along! I am loving seeing your fabric choices!

This week, we cut our fabrics. In the video below, I share some of my tips and tricks for being efficient, but remember, you do you. If you have a preferred way of cutting your fabrics - the is no right or wrong way.

THANKS for being here! Remember to post pretty little trays of your cut fabrics on social media using #charadequilt and @jitterywings.

My Go To Tips and Tricks

Tip 1: Press your fabrics, especially scraps and bundles that have been folded. This pattern uses EVERY ounce of the fabric so pressing will help ensure you have enough.

Tip 2: I hate wasting fabric, so this pattern is designed to use an entire fat quarter. If your fat quarter was cut a little short on the 21”-22” side, you may have a piece that goes into the selvage. I recommend starting by cutting piece E first and then working your way to the A pieces. That way if you do have a short Fat Quarter you are only short a tiny A piece and not a full E piece. IF you are short an A piece…just use an extra strip of something that goes with it and make some extra. You should have a couple of extra A pieces anyway. NOTE: In the video, I cut my A to E, but I talk about reversing that for safety.

Tip 3: Group your fabric pieces by size and color groups. See my images below.

Tip 4: Label your pieces. Put a little piece of paper with the letter on to and stick a straight pen all the way down through them to keep them together.

This is a shot of my Jennifer Sampou 2021 New Colors from the Jelly Roll I used in the Video. Notices that I have the colors grouped in ROY G BIV. I only had one Green, that I plan to use a the “pop” of color in the final quilt.

This is the shot of the bundle I got from Crimson Tate to make my queen. Again, my colors are grouped by ROY G BIV which is going to help me next week as we begin sewing sections together.
